I’m Dougy, a 22-year-old rapper from Scotland. I have written music since my teens, largely as a method to put my thoughts, feelings, and emotions onto paper in a creative manner. I try to be as honest as possible within my music and to experiment with sounds, moods, and content, in order to develop an artistic identity which reflects my struggles, experiences, and outlook on life. At the start of 2020 I released my debut EP ‘San Bernardo Balcony’ which included tracks reflecting on my mind-state over the previous year as I navigated through anxieties and relationships.
My sound is influenced by a variety of artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, The Alchemist, and Freddie Gibbs in its Lo-Fi, vocal-sample-heavy nature. My use of techniques such as repetition has been influenced by the late great Mark E. Smith of The Fall, and my direct writing style has been influenced by The Twilight Sad, Loyle Carner, IDLES, and Dave.
The release of my previous EP coincided with society moving into a new space due to the ongoing pandemic. I was able to navigate through these changes and personal challenges by channelling my thoughts, feelings, and emotions into new music. I took a left-turn stylistically from my first release, and was able to create the 6 tracks on my forthcoming EP ‘Impermanence’.
It is important to remember that everything is impermanent. The difficult times do not last forever and brighter days are inevitable. These brighter days are also impermanent – we wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate them if they weren’t. On my forthcoming EP, themes of pain, confusion, and suffering are evident, but the overriding theme of the project is one of hope, because this is just around the corner during darker days. The 6 tracks on ‘Impermanence’ are a reflection of my experience of this. Yours, Dougy x
